“Gold Star Primary Learning” can continue at the Gold Star Centre outside school hours and also when a child has continued beyond the primary age.
All children and adults are of equal worth in our large community.
Gold Star Primary Learning Explained
We are a little bit different from many schools as we create learning that is fun, simple and inspires the children to become someone very special.
Each year we have an annual quest to recognise the Star in everyone and to make a Star of every child. The annual quest varies its theme e.g. “Quest to be the best”, “GO Quest – the discovery quest”
Every day Learning is organised in a unique way. We believe that every moment of every day can be a learning experience and we call this a Learning Journey.
Orion Way - A Guide for the Journey
Children have the Orion Way which sets a basic expectation in behaviour and attitude.
We learn 3 core areas - Academic learning, Our World Learning and Smart Learning – this is a range of essential curriculum areas organised in a creative and inspiring way. We believe children should discover, explore, and investigate their learning as well as be guided by staff. We believe that excellence and achievement is the key to succeeding on the learning journey/adventure and becoming a Star person.
Every day children are expected to use a very simple method of personal thinking called GO POWER.
The Orion Way provides a basic guide for pupils however many other attributes for life need to be learnt e.g. self-motivation, thinking skills, independence, self-management, decision making, understanding our learning style etc.
We would describe a Star Child as:
By Year 6
A child will be all of the above and also:
a) know his/her academic strengths
b) know his/her talents

Our Special Curriculum (Summary)
Literacy – the school has its own very unique way of teaching Literacy.
Numeracy – year groups are split 3 ways in Numeracy now and we follow the national strategy.
Cross curriculum – we aim to teach much of the rest of the curriculum in a creative cross curricular way. Topics are in place across all year groups which include rainforests, pirates, castles, the 20th century, explorers, etc. Not all subjects can be included. PSHE and RE are often not included, as well as some aspects of Science.
Themes across each year at school – from 2014 each year group will be part of an additional year long theme. This will form the basis of an 8 year learning experience that will help children learn to be part of a community. These will include: together, our community, our history and our environment.
Smart Academy – this is a dedicated time for children to develop their skills in their particular talent. Sessions will be taught by a leader who is skilled in a particular "smart". Sessions will be an hour and thirty minutes. Children will:
a) know what their talent is
b) learn further skills in order to achieve in this area.
Power Boosters (Supporting all learners)
Support / catch up / extension programmes - There are a huge range of different ways we help children. There are children who need support beyond the Literacy and Numeracy sessions. e.g. for catch up, new to English, level 6 extension. Many different programmes are run for small groups, 1:1, whole year groups (e.g. Saturday school). Our aim is to help children learn, NOT provide “cramming” sessions.
Our Extra Learning
